An Apostille, pronounced: "ah-po-steel,?#8364; is the name for specialized documents or certificates issues by the State of New York. An Apostille is a certificate issued by the New York Secretary of State that proves the authenticity of a public official signature and seal. In most cases, the documents have to be first notarized, then have authenticated at the County Clerk level, before an Apostille can be obtained. The Apostille is typically attached to a notarized document as proof of authentication when that document is being sent to a country which abides by the Hague Convention.

An Authentication, sometimes called a legalization (alternately spelled legislation) is a similar, but often more complex process for documents to be used in countries that do not accept an Apostille. Sometimes the process will require authentication or endorsement by the foreign government's Embassy or Consulate, overseas Chamber of Commerce or other entities. Additionally, after being authenticated by the State of New York, they often will need to also be authenticated by the United States Department of State in Washington, DC. In some cases, the document must be translated into either English and/or the official language of the country where the documents will be used. Because the Legalization process varies by country to country, unlike an Apostille, the time and cost of obtaining an Authentication that will have the full force of law in another country can vary.
