Death Certificate Apostille, Authentication and Legalization

Notary New York has the expertise in processing obtaining an apostille, authentication, or legalization for death certificates in the State of New York. The international certification of death certificates for foreign use is often a process in which a stamped certificate is attached to your document. Once this is completed, your document is now acceptable for prevention to that country.

Many people think just because a local “official” has signed a death certificate that it may be valid for international use. This is  often not the case, as the death certificate has to be issued a special way and often needs additional documents before it can be accepted overseas.

Some documents may require additional authentication from the US Department of State in Washington DC. Our Apostille, Authentication and Legalization services will manage all aspects of what is needed to ensure your document is properly legalized

Is your New York Death Certificate Valid International?

For Death Certificates issued in New York, both inside and outside the City of New York, there are some specific requirements before the document can be used internationally.   More often than not, the Death Certificates most of our clients have are not suitable to be used outside of the US, requiring a new certificate to be issued.

Please Carefully Examine Your Document to see if it can be used internationally. If you are not sure, you can send us a copy or scan and we can let you know.

Step 1. Obtaining a Suitable Death Certificate for International Use

For New Yorkers who died outside of New York City, all death certificates certified copies are issued by the New York State Department of Health.   For those who died within the NYC, death certificates certified copies are issued by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene   Both of these agencies issue multiple kinds of certificates and have different procedures. Many death certificates issued are NOT valid for international use.   We can help you save time and money getting to correct type of certificate you need for international purposes.

Outside of New York City, the “priority” process takes one to four weeks, depending on your circumstances (otherwise as long as three months for “regular” service).    “Regular” service can take as long as 3 months, which we do not recommend for this reason.   If the death certificate you currently have is not suitable for international use, this is the first step in the process.

If the person died inside New York City, we can generally help you obtain a death certificate suitable International use can be obtained in one or two days, a little longer if you were born before 1949.

Step 2. Getting your Suitable Death Certificate ready

Once a death certificate suitable for International use has been issued, we generally can complete the process in as little as one day, depending on the country where you need to use it.   Please see our Apostille, Authentication and Legalization page for more details.
